Water Safety Day 2024

Celebrate Washington State Parks'
FIRST Annual Water Safety Day!

By: Alexandra de Leon Date: May 6th, 2024

In support of the Swim Seattle Initiative (a FREE drowning prevention and educational swim program championed by Mayor Harrell), Seattle Parks and Recreation successfully hosted Washington State Parks’ first annual Water Safety Day at Rainier Beach Community Center and Pool on Saturday, May 18!

Water Safety Day 2024 was a family-friendly, day filled with educational activities, food, music, and guest speakers. Several organizations held life jacket giveaways, and a FREE family swim rounded off the day! The HIPRC was able to take part, by hosting our own education booth!

This new annual observance was first recognized by the State of Washington on May 15, 2024 and aims to raise awareness of the danger of drowning and promote water safety skills. It was created with the passing of House Bill 1750 (also known as Yori’s Law). The bill was sponsored by Chezik Tsunoda, a water safety advocate and founder of the non-profit, No More Under

Together with No More Under, the YMCA of Greater SeattlePublic Health – Seattle & King CountyAssociated Recreation CouncilWashington State Parks, Seattle Children’s, and the University of Washington work together to remove barriers in learning to swim and help eradicate disproportionate drownings among youth of color.
