Seattle Children’s, with support from King County Behavioral Health and Recovery Division and Chad’s Legacy Project, is offering Youth Mental Health First classes for adults who regularly interact with young people. Students will gain skills on how to help an adolescent (age 12-18) in crisis and non-crisis situations experiencing a mental health challenge. The virtual class is a two-part series that includes a self-guided and live instructor-led courses. This class is free to all adults that live in King County.

The virtual class is a free two-part series. The series includes a self-guided course and a live instructor-led course for the general public who regularly interact with adolescents 12 to 18. Youth Mental Health First Aid will improve your knowledge of mental health and substance use problems, and will teach you how to connect youth with care when needed.

Similar to traditional first aid and CPR, mental health first aid is help provided to a person developing a mental health problem or experiencing a crisis before they can get professional treatment or the crisis resolves.

In this class, students will learn about:

  • Common mental health challenges for youth

  • How to help young people in both crisis and non-crisis situations
  • Risk factors and warning signs of mental illness and addiction
  • Anxiety
