HIPRC Associate Member Linda Ng Boyle, PhD (Professor of Industrial & Systems Engineering and Civil & Environmental Engineering) has accepted the position of chair of the Department of Industrial & Systems Engineering, effective September 16, 2014.
Boyle is a respected national leader in the field of transportation safety. She directs the Human Factors and Statistical Modeling Lab and serves as the associate director of research and on the board of directors of the Pacific Northwest Transportation Consortium. Boyle’s research centers on driving behavior, crash countermeasures, crash and safety analysis, and statistical modeling.
Prior to joining the UW in 2009, Boyle was an Associate Professor at the University of Iowa and a senior researcher at the U.S. Department of Transportation. She is the Chair of the Transportation Research Board (TRB) committee on Statistical Methods and also serves on the TRB Committee on Simulation and Measurement of Vehicle and Operator Performance. Linda is uniquely qualified to foster the growth of ISE in research, education, community outreach, and industry collaboration.

Congratulations to HIPRC Core Member Dr. Ali Rowhani-Rahbar, MD (Assistant Professor of Epidemiology). Dr. Rowhani-Rahbar has been selected to join the faculty at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation-sponsored Strategic Analysis, Research and Training (START) Program. START is a multidisciplinary research team at the University of Washington that provides rigorous and timely research to Global and Domestic Programs at the Foundation.
Congratulations to Janessa Graves, PhD (Assistant Professor of Nursing, Washington State University and former HIPRC Pediatric Injury Research Fellow) and Dr. Fred Rivara, MD, MPH (Professor of Pediatrics, Adjunct Professor of Epidemiology), who have published a study entitled, “Public Bicycle Share Programs and Head Injuries.” It was published online June 12th in the American Journal of Public Health. The study correlates bike-share programs with more head injuries.

Stakeholders in the University of Washington School of Medicine, School of Public Health, School of Nursing, School of Social Work and UW Medicine selected Dr. Monica S. Vavilala, MD as director for HIPRC effective April 1, 2014.
Dr. Vavilala is Professor of Anesthesiology and Pediatrics and Adjunct Professor of Neurological Surgery and Radiology at the University of Washington. She received her undergraduate education from the University of Houston and her medical degree from University of Texas Medical School in Houston, Texas. She completed two residencies, her first in pediatrics at the University of Texas Medical School and the second in anesthesiology at the University of Washington. Dr. Vavilala is an expert in the care of injured patients, has authored over 150 peer reviewed publications related to injury, and is internationally known for her work in traumatic brain injury. As a 20 year faculty member in the UW School of Medicine, she has mentored over 27 fellows across UW, has current research support from the National Institute of Neurological Disease and Stroke, and is the co-director of the NICHD sponsored UW Pediatric Injury Training Program.
Dr. Vavilala is the first anesthesiologist in the nation to lead an injury research center and the only anesthesiologist on the Brain Trauma Foundation Guidelines working group pertaining to the acute care management of patients with severe traumatic brain injury.
