By: Alexandra de Leon Date: August 7th, 2024

The University of Washington’s Harborview Injury Prevention & Research Center’s (HIPRC) 2024 INSIGHT Summer Research Program Symposium highlighted a range of injury and violence prevention research conducted by interns. Joined virtually and in-person by family, friends, mentors, researchers, and the public, the two-day symposium was held at the Harborview Research and Training Building. Thirteen interns, from across the country and globe, presented their research findings and experiences from the program at the Symposium August 1-2, 2024.

Keynote speaker, Eileen Bulger, MD, FACS, Professor of Surgery and Chief of the Division of Trauma, Burns, and Critical Care at the University of Washington School of Medicine, gave a keynote address titled “Adventures in Academic Medicine: Why Trauma Surgery.” Dr. Bulger’s keynote discussed her background and how medicine, research, and injury prevention all directly impact each other.

Following the keynote, the INSIGHT undergraduate and graduate student interns presented on their research projects, which included a wide range of injury and violence prevention topics: older adult falls, drowning prevention, healthcare equity, mental health, firearm injury prevention, school violence prevention, substance use prevention, and burn injuries.
