The UW Harborview Injury Prevention & Research Center (HIPRC) is committed to reducing injury and violence through empowering the next generation of public health leaders.

This past summer, a 2023 INSIGHT High School Alum, William Xu, collaborated with HIPRC Researchers on a Transportation Safety Study to help highlight the number of bicycle and e-scooter related injuries in Seattle.

Xu created two facts sheets using e-scooter and bicycle injury data from UW Medicine and Harborview Medical Center’s Trauma Database. The fact sheets provide:

  • Brief overview of the injuries
  • Hospital locations where patients were treated
  • PLUS preventative measures

The fact sheets were designed to help prevent injuries by educating the public on best practices and safety tips.

Researchers at the HIPRC have received funding from the Washington Traffic Safety Commission (WTSC) to examine electric scooter (e-Scooter) related injuries in Washington state and estimate the potential impact of e-Scooter share programs on injuries.
