LGBTQ+ Pride Month

LGBTQ+ Pride Month

By: Alexandra de Leon Date: June 6th, 2022

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer (LGBTQ+) Pride Month is currently celebrated each year in the month of June to honor the 1969 Stonewall Uprising in Manhattan. Today, there are approximately 1.4 million trans adults in the U.S. and an estimated 35,950 trans-identified adults and youth in WA state.

Since 2021, UW Medicine reported more than:

  • 7,522 Transgender and Gender Non-Binary (TGNB) identified patients
  • 8,000+ TGNB visit encounters
  • 414 surgical visits and 60% gender affirmed surgeries

Though health disparities are significant, gender-affirming care helps to lower the risk of suicide attempts and mental health crises.
