Over the past few weeks, the Harborview Injury Prevention & Research Center (HIPRC) Outreach Core took part in local communities’ events to spread awareness about safety and injury prevention. We were thrilled to participate in two events—the City of Des Moines’ Community Block Party and Federal Way Parks and Recreation’s Kids Day—where we connected with families and provided valuable information on pedestrian safety and drowning prevention.
City of Des Moines’ Community Block Party: Promoting Pedestrian Safety
On July 30, HIPRC partnered with Harborview Medical Center’s Outreach Team at the City of Des Moines’ Community Block Party. The event was filled with music, food, and fun, bringing together community members of all ages. Our focus for the day was on pedestrian safety, a critical topic given the number of pedestrian-related accidents that occur each year.
At our table, we provided education and resources to families on how to stay safe while walking in and around busy streets. One of the highlights was our interactive pedestrian safety activity, where we quizzed children and their parents on injury violence prevention topics such as road safety rules. So many young participants were eager to learn and test their knowledge at the event!
In addition to educational activities, organizers also distributed free bike helmets to children.
Federal Way Parks and Recreation Kids Day: Drowning Prevention for a Safer Summer
On August 7, the HIPRC teamed up with Seattle Children’s Hospital at the Federal Way Parks and Recreation Kids Day. This event, dedicated to the youngest members of the community, was all about fun! Obstacle courses, games, reptile exhibits, and so many other activities were out for kids to get out and enjoy themselves!
Our team joined Seattle Children’s table to distribute information to parents on drowning prevention and where to access life jackets in the community.
Stay tuned for more updates on our upcoming community events!
