A message from the Harborview Injury Prevention & Research Center: #StopAsianHate

By: Alexandra de Leon Date: March 18th, 2021

“We join the University of Washington community and people everywhere in mourning the victims of last night’s horrific shootings in Atlanta. The deaths of eight people, including six women of Asian descent, reflect a disturbing nationwide rise in violence, discrimination, and xenophobia directed against the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community. Our hearts are with those who have lost loved ones, as well as the survivors of the attack.

This event is one of numerous anti-Asian hate incidents which have occurred since the start of the pandemic. STOP AAPI Hate reports 3,795 incidents of anti-Asian violence and discrimination occurred from March 19, 2020 through February 2021.

Echoing the UW community, we have an individual and collective responsibility to demonstrate our core values of equity, diversity and inclusion in large and small actions.”
