The Harborview Injury Prevention & Research Center (HIPRC) is proud to join communities across Washington state in recognizing Water Safety Day—a statewide effort to raise awareness about drowning prevention and promote safe water practices.
To celebrate the second official Water Safety Day on May 17, 2025, HIPRC is partnering with No More Under and the YMCA of Greater Seattle for a community event at the Kent YMCA. We invite families and individuals to come learn life-saving water safety tips and prepare for a safe summer.

About Water Safety Day: Water Safety Day was officially recognized by the State of Washington on May 15, 2024, through the passage of House Bill 1750, also known as Yori’s Law. The bill was championed by water safety advocate Chezik Tsunoda, founder of No More Under, following the tragic loss of her son Yori to drowning.
This annual observance aims to eliminate drowning risks and ensure all children—especially youth of color—have access to swim education. In collaboration with partners including YMCA of Greater Seattle, Public Health – Seattle & King County, Associated Recreation Council, Washington State Parks, Seattle Children’s, and the University of Washington, Water Safety Day works to remove barriers in learning to swim and help eradicate disproportionate drownings among youth of color.
Let’s work together to make our communities safer, one splash at a time!
