Disaster and mass casualty preparation were major themes of the 2017 UW Medicine EMS & Trauma Conference on Sept. 25-26 in Seattle, with HIPRC members playing lead roles in teaching healthcare professionals on a broad range of trauma topics.

Emergency preparation talks tended to focus on how to adapt personnel and resources in unusual circumstances such as mass casualty events or power outages, including presentations by two doctors who treated patients during the 2016 Orlando Pulse nightclub shooting.

Core member Eileen Bulger, M.D., FACS, who is also chief of trauma at Harborview Medical Center, served as a course director for the conference and moderated a number of panel discussions. HIPRC members also shared their expertise on Stop the Bleed training, trauma, strangulation, degloving, firearm injury prevention, critical care and more.
