The King County Fire District #20’s Fire Department Safety Fair and 80th Birthday Celebration was held August 19, 2023 on the Skyway Fire Department grounds. The Health & Safety Fair featured a free community and friends breakfast, free bike helmets, a visit from “Sparky the Fire Dog,” fire truck tours, and local resource and information booths.

The HIPRC partnered with Harborview Medical Center (HMC) to create a pop-up Pedestrian Traffic Garden. The traffic garden featured three lanes of traffic on a road with no sidewalks to help teach several skills, including:

  • How to cross at a crosswalk safely
    • Stop – look left, look right, look left again.
    • Make eye contact with any driver of an approaching car
  •  How to cross at a street where there are two lanes of traffic (Where one car sees a pedestrian and stops, but the second car may not see a pedestrian, like a big van or little car)
  • Which side of a sidewalk-less road to walk on? In a situation where cars are at your back or coming towards you. (Answer: walk on the side of the street where cars are coming towards you)

The HIPRC outreach booth onsite featured pedestrian information in Spanish, Somali, Vietnamese, and English, and HMC provided Spanish and Somali translators. Attendees of all ages enjoyed FREE giveaways and educational activities, including “Spin the Wheel” pedestrian safety trivia led by HIPRC and HMC volunteers.
