2024 HIPRC Dr. Frederick P. Rivara Endowment

Applications for the 2024 HIPRC Dr. Frederick P. Rivara Endowment are now OPEN!

The University of Washington Harborview Injury Prevention & Research Center Dr. Frederick P. Rivara Endowment is designed to provide resources to graduate students and post-doctoral trainee investigators looking to conduct an injury-related project. A maximum of $3,000 (direct costs only) is available to be used toward the work. If your research includes Human Subjects, you can apply if your IRB is exempt, currently approved, or under review. This fund will not support animal research. The work must be completed within one year of funding or before the applicant finishes their training program, whichever comes first. This includes submission of a manuscript to a peer-reviewed journal and presentation of findings at an HIPRC Works-in-Progress Session. Quarterly progress reports to the sponsor are required to be provided. Budget year is July 1, 2024-June 30, 2025.

Focus of the RFA: In your proposal, please describe how this work will address an important research question that will advance knowledge of injury prevention, treatment, or recovery. The research topic should be related to one or more of the topic areas of the HIPRC: injury health equity, safe transport, traumatic brain injury, violence prevention, firearm injury prevention and policy, falls prevention, injury care, or global injury prevention. The research should also help to advance the career of the applicant.

Eligible Investigators: Graduate students, Professional students, Postdoctoral scholars, and GME resident/fellows affiliated with the University of Washington

Application Process:

Application will follow NIH formatting guidelines and include:

  • Cover Page
  • Project title and abstract (250 word maximum)
  • Research plan, 2 pages (references do not count towards page limit; figures/tables do count in 2-page research plan; supplemental documents are not allowed)
  • Budget and Budget Justification (using provided template below)
  • NIH format Bio sketch for all investigators (senior/key personnel to include mentorship team)
  • Allowable Costs:
    • Materials/Supplies/Datasets (Please note: if a computer is purchased as part of the award, it must be purchased through HIPRC and will remain as property of the University of Washington)
    • Service costs (e.g., transcription, translation)
    • Salary and fringe benefits for University of Washington-based project personnel (e.g., research assistant, research coordinator; may not be used to cover student or mentoring team)
    • Study incentives

Formatting:

  • Standard letter paper size
  • At least one-half inch margins for all pages
  • Fonts must be 11 point or larger (smaller text in figures, etc. is acceptable if legible when viewed at 100%)
  • Line spacing: no more than 6 lines per vertical inch
  • Text color: black
  • Recommended fonts: Arial, Garamond, Georgia, Helvetica, Palatino Linotype, Times New Roman, Verdana (others are acceptable if meet above requirements).

Review Process:

  • Applications will undergo scientific peer review from a panel of experts, using the standard NIH grading format.
  • Feedback from the review will be provided to all applicants.
  • Consideration will be given to scientific strength of the study, feasibility, innovation of the project proposal, fit within HIPRC research priorities, and utility in advancing the applicant’s career within injury science.
  • Funding decisions will be made within 8 weeks of the application deadline.
  • To strengthen the proposed work and future applications, feedback will be provided to all applicants regardless of funding decision.
